Archaeological find of the week – July 2022

This lead flask was found in the field to the East of Beck Lane, through which two roads once ran among seventeen smaller fields. It is around two inches high by one inch wide and has loops around the neck which may have been for the attachment of carrying cords. It has been squashed flat. It has feint decoration, on one side (right image) it appears to have a picture of three palm trees.

The palm trees suggest a middle eastern connection (if not origin). Perhaps this could be Roman or much later mediaeval with connections to the Crusades. One observer has suggested it may be a religious item for carrying holy water on a pilgramage.

  1. I found several of these lead Ampullae whilst Metal Detecting in and around the village. They were all reckoned to originate from the Walsingham Pilgrimage site and contained Holy Water . They were buried in the fields to bless them. Very rare to find one that is not squashed.
